The 24th Merano Wine Festival took place from November 6 to 9, 2015. It is a truly unique event.
Firstly, the venue: Merano, or Meran in German, is a town with a population of 40,000 located in the Alto Adige, South Tyrol, in the autonomous province of Bolzano. It is a neat, affluent town brimming with charming sights such as its Austrian-style monuments, its dizzyingly high mountains and its precarious vineyard locations.
Then there’s the selection of wines: the festival gathers a select group of over 450 wine growers chosen by the selection committee beneath the golden décor of the theatre and adjoining rooms. The finest Italian producers attend alongside exhibitors from approximately fifteen other countries including several dozen producers from Champagne – after all, Italy is the world’s fifth-largest consumer of French bubbly.
And finally, the simplicity of the event: every exhibitor is given the same spartan conditions – just a table – and visitors can meet and chat with producers with no particular formalities or pre-booked appointments.
Add to this the countless events and masterclasses that take place concurrently with the festival, such as the Gourmet show where truffles, cold meats, cheeses and other culinary delights can be tasted, and you’ll understand why we certainly won’t be missing next year’s festival!
