Château de Salles’ 5 hectares of vineyards are located in the heart of the Buzet appellation area on hillsides of deep clay-limestone soils strewn with gravel which bask in remarkable sunshine. The varietal range is predominantly Merlot (80%) complemented by Cabernet-Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s vineyards are managed using environmentally-friendly, responsible viticultural techniques. The wine making process is traditional with total destemming and crushing of the fruit, lengthy vatting, temperature control, moderate vertical pressing and malolactic fermentation after running off.
A lot of care and attention is paid to the ageing process in stainless steel tanks. Some of the wines, including the d’Artagnan label, are aged in casks for 18 months. Château de Salles produces an average 35,000 bottles every vintage. In keeping with the independent wine growers’ charter, the wines are bottled at the chateau.
A descendant of the illustrious Charles de Batz, otherwise known as d’Artagnan, the legendary Gascon musketeer, Henry de Batz now heads up Château de Salles, the 18th-century family-owned property. He views each vintage as a subtle fusion of passion, respect for tradition and nature.
