Black Rooster Presentation: Chianti Classico Collection CCC2015

Since 2005 the trademark Black Rooster expresses the energy and the elegance within the wines of the appellation Chianti Classico, a group of nearly 600 producers that has proved to be a Squadra vincente! A great communication strategy and the richness of the different expressions among the territory are the strengths of Chianti Classico. A part from the blind tasting performed during the first day, in collaboration with AIS sommeliers, that helped select which producers visit directly at their table, the professional taster had the opportunity to discover the particularities of each of 9 communities and sub areas inside the Chianti Classico territory, since the producers tables were organized by village.

517 labels were presented, 2014 vintage was presented in Anteprima (it will be released on the market on October), Riserva 2012 and Gran Selezione (2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009). Chianti Classico 2013 seduces by its fruity aroma precision and fresh mouthfeel thanks to perfect grape ripening. Riserva 2012 are powerful and mellow wines, 2011 being more elegant, great wines especially for those producers still not offering a Gran Selezione label.

In 2013 the Consortium established a new wine typology at the top of the quality pyramid that was presented to the trade last year: Gran Selezione. The technical criteria are selected grapes from vintner’s best plot, aging period of 30 months with 3 months of bottle refinement. Our fear about Gran Selezione was that a long aging period would result in too powerful and structured wines, but producers have showed applying barrel-aging in a masterly way. In our selection below, 2010 seems the precious year to keep.

Next year will be time to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the edict that delimited the geographical area of production. Chianti Classico cannot be divided into homogeneous subzones because of the diversity of the soil, Galestro (marl of layered sandstone with chalk and clay) and Albarese (clay-limestone) alternate, Macigno (blue-grey sandstone) concentrates in higher altitudes (along Monti del Chianti) and the altitude range goes from 250 to 700 m above sea level, offering several microclimates. So a part from villages, not only the historical Lega del Chianti formed by Gaiole (Badia a Coltibuono), Castellina (Bibbiano) and Radda (Borgo Salcetino), sub areas within the communities should be allowed to be mentioned on the label and regulated.

We would like to highlight the sub area of Lamole in Greve in Chianti (Podere Castellinuzza, Castelli del Grevepesa, Lamole di Lamole, I Fabbri). Also, the producers of Castelnuovo Berardenga exchange between themselves are showing cohesion in the quality level (Dievole, Losi Querciavalle, Borgo Scopeto, Bindi Sergardi, Castell’in Villa and Felsina).
