Another step forward for Barbera excellence

Barbera is one of the most extensively planted grape variety in Piedmont and North Italy. Its fruity and fresh style together with consistent yields made it really popular as daily base wine back in the 60s. Unfortunately without any quality focus Barbera lost its interest and prestige. The revolution came thanks to Giacomo Bologna who produced Bricco dell’Uccellone on vintage 1982 showing the real potential of the variety finest expression and put it at the highest level among Italian red wines. Its fruity profile and high acidity combine well with barrel fermentation that adds the structure and tannins it lacks, resulting in a more complex and balanced wine, capable of ageing.

Barbera needs sun and warm conditions, good sun exposure, well-drained soils, protection from the winds and maximum high of 400m. Three special subareas inside the Barbera d’Asti appellation were defined in the Barbera d’Asti Superiore docg technical guideline: Tinella, Nizza and Colli Astigiano. Two quality parameters were stablished: lower yields (70q/ha) and longer ageing periods (18-24 months).

The producers from Nizza area have pursued their will to label their wines with the name of the territory and not the grape variety anymore, so an independent appellation is born: Nizza docg. The first bottles following the new rules from vintage 2014 has been released into the market since this past July.

On top of the ratings for Barbera d’Asti tasting, we find two Barbera d’Asti Superiore Nizza that will be labelled Nizza docg on future vintages: Michele Chiarlo Nizza La Court 2013 and Isolabella della Croce Nizza Augusta 2011.

Online ratings also include the producers La Barbatella, Baravalle and Cantina TreSecoli in the Nizza area and we would like to mention the great example of Barbera d’Asti Superiore subzone Tinella 2012 from Moretti Adimari ahead from general appellation Barbera d’Asti Superiore.

The 2016 Gold award Barbera d’Asti Superiore docg wines without mention are: Beppe Marino Quattro Filari 2011, Cantina Mosparone Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2012 and Cascina Castlet Passum 2012.

In its base appellation, Barbera d’Asti awarded Gold 2016 are: Serra Domenico Costacasareggio 2015, Pico Maccario Lavignone 2015, Poggio Ridente Vallia 2015 and Cantina Mosparone Barbera d’Asti 2013.
